Why your “Why” is so important!

Why is fitness and nutrition so important to me?  My WHY is what I think of when I feel like quitting.  Whether I am thinking of skipping my workout that day or quitting the program I am on – I think back to WHY I started.  For me my why is simple – Everyday I do some kind of exercise whether its walking, stretching or a workout program to prevent Lupus from taking control of my body making me immobile and either wheelchair or bed bound. I exercise to stay in control of my health for my family and for me!  My family is so central to why I do most anything.  My goal is to fight for good health everyday so Lupus doesn’t have an advantage.  It may not be totally scientific but I believe that being active and eating right has minimized many of my symptoms over the years.  I am about to start a new challenge group that is going to start P90X and continue on to P90X2 – Not too many people with Lupus can say that.  I am not only just lucky that I am able to do these programs – I work hard and keep at it and I think that attitude and strength also fuels me on and enables me to continue to challenge myself physically even though some days I have a hard time because of my illness.

You may be reading this and have Lupus – or maybe you found this post because you searched P90X – either way you have a WHY!  When times are tough and you feel like quitting – remember WHY you started and get back to it!

Love to MY WHY! <3

Love to MY WHY! <3

I have one more WHY that I want to talk about in this post – It’s Why I am a Beachbody Coach.  I have seen friends and family members transform their health and reach fitness levels they didn’t think possible at their age!  I have helped people with Lupus and Cancer fight their illness and stay positive  and motivated even when things were tough.  I love changing people’s lives.  Is it a miracle cure – NO but it certainly can help!  I know that helping people has changed my life and I have seen how coming together – supporting one another as we learn to be healthy and fit has changed others lives.  It’s a wonderful feeling to see that happen.  I saw this picture online one day and I thought it really summed up how I feel about coaching.  BB Coach

So what is the moral of this story?  Take some time – think about Why leading a fit life is important to you and when you feel like quitting or skipping a workout – REMEMBER WHY YOU STARTED!

Ah Spring – Renewal – Get your butt off the couch and get fit!

Flowered TreesOk, I have to say for myself I have had a tough winter.  I have lost a very close friend to breast cancer, my son has had a number of surgeries and I have felt the effects of Lupus most of the season.  It’s been challenging to say the least.  But its spring, flowers are blooming, the weather is warming and I feel an urgency to get back to living well.  Since going vegan in December I have lost a little weight but feel that I am eating healthier than ever in my life.  I have learned so much through all the cookbooks, vegan guides and doctors research that I feel ready for a big challenge.

P90X With that said – I want to take some of you along for the ride.  After some considerable reflection I have decided that P90X was probably my favorite workout that I have done to date.  Don’t get me wrong… I have loved my journey through TurboFire, Les Mills Pump and Les Mills Combat but none of them seemed to be as well-rounded as

P90X.  P90x now has a second version P90X2 that takes your core, your athleticism and your strength to a whole new level.  As I am feeling ready for a big challenge I am going to host a P90X to a P90X2 challenge group.

Your Trainer Tony HortonStarting with P90X in May a group of us together will journey through the challenging program with Tony Horton as your trainer and me as your enthusiastic coach.  I have been cooking up a storm over the last year and I am going to share recipes from my favorite cookbooks along the way to keep you from getting bored with your food but keep you nutritionally ON TRACK!

Living with LupusFor those who may be saying P90X is too hard — I do it – I have Lupus and some days are really challenging for me.  P90X IS a challenging workout but Tony always has a modification for those who can’t jump or aren’t able to go full-out.  I will say my week 1 when I first did this program was laughable – (no really my husband

and kids laughed at me) – but I stuck with it and at the end I was so much stronger and you can be too!  Here’s a couple of videos to give you a sneak peek at the workouts!   P90X  or P90X2

lift you higherWhat is a challenge group you ask?  It’s a Facebook private group of people all doing the same program as you – struggling and succeeding just like you – but working towards similar goals.  We are all there to support each other.  With that said – As this is a challenging program – I am looking for people who are ready to make a positive change in their life – that can put in the time to improve their health – commit to the program AND to the group.  Expectations are that people post their workouts, share tips and recipes, and support each other through the process.  We are stronger together than we are on our own!  The best groups I have hosted had people who were in it till the end.  Made the commitment, shared sweaty photos, food and their story and made a difference in their health and the success of the group!  Here is a short video about the Beachbody Challenge.   What’s a Challenge group?

So what I am asking here?  This is a CALL TO ACTION!!!! Do you want to change your life?  How about your health?  Want to learn more or have questions please feel free to post or email me at anastasia@fit4abetterlife.com.  Like my Facebook page and post to me there!  I am so excited about it I can hardly wait for MAY!!!!

Trying to make a cadet smile can be a challenge.

Trying to make a cadet smile can be a challenge.

Now if that wasn’t enough – my son Taylor is coming home from Texas A&M for the summer.  He has had two surgeries through the winter and is done with rehab and is ready to kick it up a notch.  He’s a rising junior and is part of the Corps of Cadets.  With that said he’s always been fit and skinny but not big by any stretch.  He wants to do Body Beast!  For those that don’t know Body Beast is a Beachbody workout that will pack on MUSCLE!  He is also a coach and will be heavily involved in this group!  If Muscle is what you are looking for this program is for YOU!!!!  I have seen lean scrawny guys come out packing on the muscle – the supplements are different, the meal plans are different and its all about muscle! This group will kick of Mid MAY!!!

Beast up Peeps!

My review of a few Beachbody Programs

Eating a balanced plant-based diet

It has been a little bit of time since I have posted.  I have been really working hard to get my eating right over the last several months.  I am Vegan now with an occasional fish dish here and there.  Eating this way has definitely allowed me to maintain my weight easily whether I was counting calories or not, exercising or not and has made it much easier when I eat out to make healthier choices.  Although I will say eating out definitely has new challenges for me as most restaurants do not have a vegan friendly menu, I have gotten really good at making a dish vegan and when its impossible – I go to the fish.

Les Mills Combat!

As for my workouts lately I have been doing Les Mills Combat.  I find it to be fun and – I always feel like I could possibly kick some serious ass after finishing one of their workouts.  lol  Now that I have moved through several Beachbody programs I feel like I have come full circle back to P90X.  When I was doing P90X I feel like I was pushing myself harder and in new ways throughout the program.  Since my start I have graduated from P90X, TurboFire, made it through most of the Les Mills Pump and Combat workouts and dabbled in Insanity and Tai Chang.  I found each of them to be instructive and fun in different ways.  Here is my take:

turbofire cover

You’re Not Tired!

TurboFire - FUN!  High props to Chalene for building my confidence, self-image and making me believe I can do anything.  I definitely recommend Chalene if you are down about your body image and LOVE funky fun cardio.  She gets it done and really pumps you up.  I looked forward to my workouts with Chalene every day.  I did miss the weights though – but she did kick my butt with the bands.  Also easy to travel with if you have to travel for your work.

les mills pump

Pump you up!

Les Mills Pump - I had never done a lot of bar bell work.  I loved the bar – it was easier for me to control and I definitely noticed I was getting stronger.  Some of the instructors are a bit cheesy and need to get a little more natural in their delivery but the workouts were challenging and I learned a lot about form.  I also like the fact that their schedule wasn’t as intense as P90X.  Weights 3 days a week plus some cardio, yoga and stretching mixed in.  It was manageable with a busy schedule.

UnleashYourInnerWarrior

Stay with the fight!

Les Mills Combat - Cardio with Combat.  I love my strapping on my gloves – getting into some boxing, Tae Kwon Do, Thai fighting – so many styles.  I learned a lot and loved the Kata’s.  Again – a little cheesy here and there but a mix of weights and cardio (a bit heavier on the cardio side) but challenging.  But its all combat all the time.

insanity_170x100

Are you ready?

Insanity - I love Shaun T.  I do – but there is no modified example for Insanity and my joints can’t take his high impact lashing he gives you in each Insanity workout.  I would get through a workout and then feel like I was disabled for like 2 days.  Its tough.  Now remember I have Lupus.  My friend Val who is a little older than me totally rocked Insanity not missing 1 day.  She is a rock star if you ask me but doesn’t have the joint issues I do.  If you want an insane push yourself beyond your limits every workout intense cardio experience that will definitely lean you out and you are up for that kind of challenge – go for it!  In 60 days you will have great results.  If you are like me and need to modify occasionally – pick another program.

p90x package

What’s your favorite soup? lol

Now back to the program that started it all for me – P90X for me was very well-rounded.  It had cardio, it had weights, it pushed you.  I personally find Tony Horton to be funny (not everyone would agree with me here) but he motivates me.  I wasn’t bored and noticed results.  I also was able to build up to the routines and because you track what you do for each workout I could see I was improving in weights and reps.  The toughest thing about P90X is the time – if you are a busy working professional with a family finding an hour a day, 6 days a week can be challenging.  Oh did I mention Yoga X is 90 min – so one day its an hour and a half.  Is it worth it?  Yes – but you have to find the time.

What’s next for me? – I am going to finish out Les Mills Combat and move on to P90X2.  I will be starting a challenge group for those who want to join in – have an amazing summer getting fit and athletic and need support along the way.  If that’s you – post a message and connect with me on Facebook www.facebook.com/anastasiarjahadi

What is your favorite Beachbody program and why?  I’d love to hear from you!

My Walk for Lupus 2012!

This year I decided to get involved and try and raise some money towards our local Walk for Lupus.  I have never participated in these walks primarily because they have always scheduled them late into the fall when the weather was really too cold for me to be out for a walk (no idea who thought that was a good plan) but this year they moved it up to early October.

Unfortunately all my friends had activities of their own and couldn’t join me but I did have my best friend there – my husband and my youngest son Ethan and of course my sweet dog Maggie to walk with me.  I stayed up late the night before and made our team tshirts.  It was my first time trying to paint on fabric.  I learned a lot.  I think they turned out pretty good and we had a good time.  Next year I know that I need to start earlier in my fundraising and see if I can’t get a bigger group together.  I learned a lot about how they structure the teams and the websites for fundraising and think I could be more effective our second time around.
We were so lucky to have 80+ degree weather!  I am so grateful to all those who contributed to my campaign and moved by many of the families I saw walking with their persons affected by this difficult disease.  It was a great experience and I know that next year I can even raise more awareness.  I would even love to do a fitness challenge group for people with Lupus!  Maybe I need to start working on that now.

I will definitely participate again next year!

Les Mills Pump and Turbo Fire Hybrid

Beachbody has some amazing programs that really are total body workouts.  However, we are human and guess what – we sometimes get bored with our workouts.  Sometimes we feel that these workouts give us a lot of one thing but we feel we miss something from another one.  As I am almost 60 days into Turbo Fire I am really missing weight training.  Turbo Fire does have strength training workouts using the bands and while I find these workouts incredibly challenging, there is something for me about using weights that I love.  I have been watching several teams complete their Les Mills Pump challenges and those teams are having amazing results building lean muscle.  So as I am starting a Challenge group of my own come this August (two weeks away) why not take my last days and turn them into a hybrid between the two programs? Staying Accountable Week of June 11th

I am a bit behind on this post.  Last week was the last week of school for my youngest who is now going to be a sophomore in high school.  My oldest is home from college and in a lot of ways I let the week get away from me.  I worked out half as much as usual but I still did really well eating healthy.  This weekend I got my act together, made my plan for the week and got back to my usual workout schedule.  Not working out as much definitely made me start feeling fatigued and I could tell my joint pain from having lupus was more noticeable.  I really think being as active as I am keeps a lot of my illness under control.  This week I am sharing some great recipes and some results! P90X
This 90 Day popular program includes 12 routines that keep introducing new moves and challenging your muscles to help get you fit and ripped. Tony Horton is a great motivator and he keeps you engaged throughout your workouts with humor and encouragement. This program focuses on muscle confusion to help you get Extreme Results, it also provides you a 3 phase nutrition plan, calendar and online support. Any Dad would love this program. It’s my husband’s favorite so far!
P90X2
Maybe the man in your life is a P90X grad or is already quite fit and could be looking for a new challenge. P90X2 ups the ante with a training technique developed by professional sports trainers for world class results: P.A.P or Post Activation Potentiation. You get 12 amazing workouts focused on chiseling your body while building you balance, agility, core strength and athleticism. Tony really created an amazing challenging program that rivals many pro athletes’ training.
INSANITY
If Cardio is the sparkle in your Dad’s eye and they really want to push their limits give Insanity a go. Shaun T gives you an intense 60 day total body conditioning program. You don’t need any equipment or weights just the desire to dig deep and push past your limits. This Max Interval Training program is not your typical cardio; it is 10 insane workouts that will burn up to 1000 calories in an hour. I only recommend this program to those who have semi fit or active Dads that are ready to push their limits!

LES MILLS PUMP
This workout utilizes barbell based rapid weight loss and accelerated strength training to burn calories and give you a lean, toned body with 7 fat blasting, lean muscle workouts! You will get your very own barbell with this program with a set of two 5 lb and two 10 lb weighted plates, fitness guide, lean nutrition guide and a bonus core workout. If lean muscle is your dad’s goal LES MILLS is the way to go!

Tai Cheng
This program is a revolutionary program for any age. It combines 21st century fitness science with the centuries old techniques of Tai Chi to help reduce joint and muscle pain through better muscle control. You will learn the 18 fundamental moves of Tai Chi in just 90 days. Every day teaches you a new Tai Chi move. Over the length of the program in phases, you will learn to put the moves together into sequence. You will experience increased balance and strength, improved joint function, a wider range of motion, less stiffness, greater flexibility and an overall feeling of natural energy and well-being. Shaun T from insanity recently started this program as many others who do intense programs like insanity have found it so beneficial to your body. I have also heard many a golfer say that their swing greatly improved as well. It has many applications but all will leave you in a better place than when you started.

10 Minute Trainer
For the dad that doesn’t have a lot of time but still wants to get fit – 10 Minute Trainer is the way to go! Another Tony Horton program that combines toning and resistance bands with cardio and abs to work multiple body parts at the same time giving you a time saving but highly effective workout. It’s like multitasking for your muscles! With 10 Minutes a Day you will still see incredible results and your 10 minutes free will becomes time well spent!

Power 90
Power 90 came before P90X and is a great program to start with if P90X looks too extreme. This 90 program leverages a sectional progression training technique where each movement targets a specific zone of the body for maximum fat burning and full body sculpting. Its still a challenging program and you will definitely seem transformational results.

Relay For Life – This month my commissions go to my friend Ellen!

Me & Ellen Tel Aviv December 2011

These recent years I have given support to Relay for Life runner and breast cancer fighter Ellen Kennedy.  She is an amazing friend and is fighting Breast Cancer for the second time.  She was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2009.  After a mastectomy, radiation and chemotherapy she was put on maintenance medication Sept 2009.  In Feb 2010 she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer with metastasis to the lungs.  The cancer has now spread to her bones and liver.  She recently started treatment at a specialty center and is fighting tough!  She inspires me everyday.

This month to help raise money for her I will donate all my commissions for new orders of Shakeology Home Direct or any new Challenge Pack to her Relay for life.  Continue reading

Staying Accountable

What is your biggest challenge being accountable to fitness and nutrition everyday?  For me its tracking food and drinking water.  As usual this week I have planned my meals out – still working towards a vegan lifestyle and I am using my smart phone to set alarms to help me drink water.  Continue reading
